Welcome to BECA 510! We need to complete a few things before we start the course. 1) Learn how to navigate this website. 2) Learn how the Modules work 3) Complete the Introduction Activity 4) Sign up for Slack and join the BECA 510 workspace and 5) Complete the BECA 510 Student Survey.
Website Navigation
It’s important to understand how to navigate this website so you can locate the primary sources of information used throughout the semester. The video below will cover how this website is structured. Please pay particular attention to the links on the homepage, modules, and the syllabus section.
Using the Modules
We will use the Modules to cover all learning material and concepts for this course. Each module will include readings, videos, demonstrations, and activities. Each module should be completed prior to attending class. This way we can spend less time lecturing about the learning material, and more time practicing audio. You can look at the schedule below to view the dates that each module should be completed.

Introduction Activity
The Introduction Activity should briefly describe your motivation for enrolling in SFSU’s BECA program. You can ask yourself, how did you become interested in media? What are your experiences with audio production, recording, editing, live sound, and/or post production? Also, what do you do outside of school? I know some of you may know each other, so feel free to write about something your cohorts may not know about you. This is my chance to get to know all of you so I can better serve your interests. The written content should be between 50 and 75 words, so please remain brief. Once you’re finished, you can paste your introduction to the Welcome Channel on our Slack Workspace. The link and information to join our Slack Channel is towards the bottom of this page.
BECA 510 Student Survey
Welcome to BECA 510! I’d like to use this survey to get to know what you expect from this course. This will allow me tailor this course to your interests (if possible). Also, you’ll be working in groups of 3 to 5 throughout the semester when assisting in live sound reinforcement. I’d like to create the groups, but to do so, it would be beneficial if I knew which audio classes you took so far in the BECA department. Thanks for taking your time to complete this survey!
Join Our Slack Workspace
Slack will be used as the primary source of communication. If you’ve never used Slack, you can think of it as a chat room where you can communicate publicly and privately with your instructor and students. Also, you can upload word documents, PDFs, audio, and video files. If you need to reach me, the quickest and most efficient way is to message me through Slack. I have the application downloaded on my phone, so I can respond quickly if I’m able to. You can use the links below to download Slack and join our Audio Production Basics workspace. Once you enter our workspace, please paste your introduction in the “welcome” channel on our Slack Workspace. I’ve included a brief 3-minute tutorial about setting up Slack.
Please note, you can choose to run Slack as a standalone application, or use your browser to open Slack, so you are not required to download the application.
